Digoin & Sarreguemines Transferware Plates of Christopher Columbus and Claude Chappe for your consideration. The pair of plates each measure approx. 7 inches in diameter. First half 20th Century. Each plate has raised basketweave border outlined in blue glaze. One plate has scene of Christopher Columbus on ship with seamen that reads, “CHRISTOPHE COLOMB. ne en 1441. decouvre PAMERIQUE en 1492. meurt en 1506.” Translated to English reads approx. “Christopher Columbus born in 1441, discovered America in 1492, died in 1506”. The second plate has scene of Claude Chappe in inventers laboratory with young apprentice. The plate reads, “Claude CHAPPE. ne en 1765. invenie le Telegraphe en 1791, meurten en 1805.”. Translated to English reads approx. “Claude Chappe was born in 1765, invented the telegraph in 1791, and died in 1805”. Each plate has Digoin & Sarreguemines crown and shield stamp on back of plate. Excellent condition, no chips or cracks. Shows minor wear commensurate with age. See photos. Displays splendid!
