Description
This piece features excellent historical provenance, being hand-signed “J. A. Brown” and clearly dated “1870” in the lower-left corner. The execution and materials are highly indicative of regional American or British academic portraiture of the late Victorian era.
• Medium: Original oil on linen canvas.
• Canvas Backing: Shows authentic 19th-century acidification (natural browning), minor historic water/oil staining, and age-appropriate wear.
• Stretcher Bars: Mounted on its original, period-correct mitered wooden stretcher frame complete with hand-cut corner tension keys (wedges).
• Hardware: Features original iron fasteners showing heavy, stable oxidation (rust) consistent with 150+ years of age.
• Framing: Sold unframed.
This painting is being sold in honest, unrestored antique condition with a wonderful historic patina. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description:
• Paint Loss: There is significant flaking and paint loss along the perimeter, most notably along the top edge where the historic primer has detached from the canvas.
• Surface: Widespread, stable age-craquelure is present across the entire canvas surface, with minor paint fleck losses scattered across the face and chest.
• Stability: The canvas tension is loose but original. The paint layer is currently stable but should be handled with care.
This piece is an absolute dream for collectors of Folk Art, Dark Academia aesthetics, or Grandmillennial decor. It can be displayed immediately to showcase its rugged, authentic antique character, or would make an excellent candidate for professional conservation and a period gilt frame.
