Rare, Japanese Woodblock Fishing Pillar Print by Shoda Koho for your consideration. The framed print measures approx. 7 1/8 inches X 11 5/8 inches and approx. 1/2 of an inch thick. The print measures approx. 3 3/8 inches X 8 inches. Japanese, first half 20th Century. Attributed to the artist Shoda Koho (Kan Shoda) a.k.a. Hiroshima Koho (庄田耕峯, ca. 1871-1946) for Hasegawa/Nishinomiya Publishing. Student of Ogata Gekkō (尾形月耕, 1859-1920). Shin-hanga (“New Prints”) art movement, influenced by European Impressionism. Pillar print (ko-tanzaku); depicts mountainous maritime setting, fishing vessels sailing at sunset. Unmarked, no signatures detected. Not examined outside of frame. Print is under glass and encased in black painted wood frame. Old paper backing with remnant of framing company’s label on back. Wire for hanging on wall. Very good vintage condition. Shows minor wear commensurate with age. Margins likely trimmed, fairly typical for these style prints. Age staining towards bottom of matte. See photos. Displays beautiful! Scarce!
