Luxurious Pair of Gien Faience Majolica Pottery Wall Sconces for your consideration. Each wall sconce measures approx. 18 inches tall, 11 inches wide and approx. 6 1/4 inches deep. French; late 19th to early 20th Century. Tin-glazed kaolin earthenware fashioned in the form of medieval shields. Entirely hand decorated. Blue and yellow floral border. Top of plaque is decorated with a basket of fruit and sprigs. Further down the plaque are a pair of dolphins tied together with bow-tied ribbon and fleur-de-lis decorated collar. The dolphins appear to be connected with the floral designs, as blue and green tendrils fall in leafy-vined foliage. A painted portrait of a young man wearing a crown towards the bottom of the plaque with a snail motif on either side. Ormolu three branched-armed candlestick holders with cartouche design. Signed on back of each, “Gien” and impressed, “1”. Excellent antique condition. Shows minor wear commensurate with age and use. See photos. Displays phenomenal!
