Rare & Original Antique Stagecoach Travel Trunk for your consideration. The trunk measures approx. 28 inches long, 12 inches deep and 10 3/4 inches tall. American, likely New England, 19th Century. Trunk. Stripped Pine, Dome-Top, “Camelback” Lid. Original hardware, surface-mounted keyhole iron lock plate and hand-forged, drop-swing side handles mounted on ornate, scalloped backplates. At some point in history, the trunk’s original leather exterior was stripped away, beautifully exposing the thick, native white pine planks underneath. The wood features a warm, rich honey patina complete with telltale rows of original tack holes and small iron pins—witness marks of its past life. The interior retains faint remnants of block-printed botanical stencil wallpaper lining. This Victorian leaf-and-vignette pattern was applied by the manufacturer to protect fine linens from raw wood sap.
Good antique condition. Shows wear commensurate with age and centuries of authentic travel use. Structurally sound and sturdy. The exterior wood has a beautiful, raw, natural aged finish. The interior wallpaper shows expected historic wear, staining, and loss. The leather hinges have long ago detached, as the lid lifts completely off. See photos. Displays handsomely!
Thanks to this trunk’s highly sought-after “warm wood” farmhouse aesthetic and unique proportions, this trunk is incredibly versatile for modern interiors. It makes a wonderful storage box for blankets and games or serves as the perfect statement entryway piece to house boots, umbrellas and more.
