Victorian Shell Cameo Portrait of Classical Bearded Male Facing Left

Rare & Original Antique Shell Cameo for your consideration. The cameo is larger in size, measuring approx. 1 1/2 inches (38mm) wide, 1 7/8 inches tall (47.5mm) and 3/8 of an inch (9.4mm) deep. Continental, mid-to-late 19th Century. Unmounted, loose, high-relief, hand carved shell cameo. Profile portrait of classical Greek or Roman male figure, such as the god Zeus, a philosopher, or a hero, shown with detailed wavy hair, a beard, and draped fabric over the shoulder. The portrait faces left, which is somewhat less common in traditional hand-carved cameos because many carvers were right-handed and naturally carved profiles facing right. Very good antique condition. Shows wear commensurate with age. Shallow chipping to the upper backside edge. Not noticeable except under close examination. Natural color variations. See photos.
