Antique Saint John the Evangelist Plaque for your consideration. The plaque measures approx. 11 1/2 inches X 15 1/4 inches and approx. 1 1/4 inches deep. Continental, mid 19th Century. Baroque style, after Domenichino Zampieri (1581-1641). Gilded, cast iron bas-relief plaque. Seated saint with halo, holding a scroll, eagle descending with quill pen in beak, poisoned chalice holding symbolic serpent in background. The eagle is often attributed to Saint John the Evangelist, likely representing one of the four creatures (symbolic of the Gospels) that are described as surrounding God’s throne in the Bible depicted in Revelation 4:7. He is also often shown holding a chalice containing a serpent, alluding to the cup of sorrow foretold by Jesus Christ (Matthew 26:39). Excellent antique condition. Shows minor wear commensurate with age and use. Natural aged patina. See photos. Displays awe-inspiring!
