Antique Dresden Franziska Hirsch Handleless Tea Bowl c.1901-14

$95.00

Antique Dresden Franziska Hirsch Tea Bowl for your consideration. The bowl measures approx. 2 inches tall and approx. 2 3/4 inches in diameter. The footed rim measures approx. 2 inches in diameter. Germany, Dresden, early 20th century. Porcelain, handleless porcelain tea bowl (or chocolate cup) comes from the prestigious Dresden studio of Franziska Hirsch (in operation dating from 1893 to 1930). Operating out of Struwestrasse 19, Hirsch’s workshop was world-renowned for employing the finest artisans to hand-paint blank porcelain wares sourced from premium contemporary factories. This specific piece features a vibrant, masterfully hand-painted bouquet of classic Dresden summer flowers—including a prominent purple rose, bright orange blossoms, and delicate forget-me-nots—set against a pristine white porcelain body. The upper rim is elegantly finished with an intricate, hand-applied gold gilded swag and geometric lattice border.

The Fascinating “Meissen Lawsuit” History Behind the Mark

The backstamp on the base of this cup tells a compelling story of late 19th-century luxury brand rivalry. When Franziska Hirsch opened her studio in 1893, her original mark featured a variation of crossed lines that included her initial “H.” The legendary Meissen porcelain factory immediately sued her, claiming her mark was designed to intentionally mimic their iconic “crossed swords” trademark.
Meissen won the lawsuit, and in 1896, Hirsch was legally barred from using her original mark. In response, she introduced the brilliant “winged H” monogram seen on the bottom of this cup. Because of this exact legal transition, this specific backstamp securely dates the production of this piece between 1896 and 1914 (specifically favored between 1901-1914), making it a wonderful conversation piece for any serious porcelain enthusiast.

Excellent antique condition. No chips or cracks. Shows minor wear commensurate with age and use. The white glaze remains bright and glossy. The delicate hand-painted floral enamels are crisp and vibrant. The fragile gold gilding shows very little loss. See photos. Displays impressive!
