Description
Early 19th Century Staffordshire “Night Watchman” character toby jug for your consideration. The jug measures approx. 9 inches tall and approx. 7 inches from spout to handle. The jug is fashioned after George Whitfield (1714-1770) who was a famous Methodist preacher and was good friends with John Wesley. Whitfield was well known for his sermons at night by the light of a lamp. The jug depicts a gentleman wearing a white wig and sitting in a chair. In his left hand he holds his hat and in his right a lantern. Attractive polychrome marbleized base. Very good condition. Shows wear commensurate with age and use. Crazing and a few age spots. Tip of right pinkie appears to be slightly chipped. Impact spider web lines on base. Displays wonderful!
