Rare & Original Antique Portrait Painting of a Knight Decorating a John Townsend Charger for your consideration. The charger is very large, measuring approx. 16 1/2 inches in diameter and approx. 1 1/2 inches deep. Georgian, English, 18th Century, London, c.1750-1780. Pewter “sadware” platter made by Quaker pewterer, John Townsend (1724–1801). Hand forged, single-bead rim. Pewterer marks on back of charger includes; 1748 Townsend touch-mark, London label, and “HH” ownership initials. The charger was later hand painted in the 19th Century; French School, Gothic Revival style, depicting a romanticized medieval chivalrous knight adorned in Renaissance armor. The painting is hand signed, “A.R. Patterson ’89”. These types of later-decorated items were a common practice during the late 1800s, and is now known to collectors simply as Victorian Folk Art. The charger is in excellent antique condition. Shows minor wear commensurate with age and use. Natural aged patina. See photos. Displays exceptional!
