Arts & Crafts Gesso Framed Lithograph titled “Psyche” by Kendall for your consideration. The framed print measures approx. 12 inches X 16 inches and approx. 3/4 of an inch thick. American, first half 20th Century. Decorative gesso cartouche frame with beautiful young girl wearing butterfly wings on her back. In addition, a butterfly rests gracefully on hear head. The lithograph is after the original painting, “Psyche” by William Sergeant Kendall (1869-1938). Psykhe (Psyche) was the goddess of the soul and the wife of Eros (Roman Cupid; god of love). Kendall was a unique artist in which his wife and three young daughters were frequent subjects in his early works. This particular work is believed to be fashioned after their daughter, Hedone; which means “Pleasure”. Original paper label on back that reads, “ART PRODUCTS No. 926-1 PSYCHE By Kendall P. J. OSBORNE COMPANY Zeeland, Michigan”. Further illegible handwriting on back of picture as well. Very good vintage condition. Shows wear commensurate with age. A little bit of light staining, especially under her right leg. Not noticeable except under close examination. See photos. Displays lovely!
