Antique Ethiopian Coptic Processional Cross

Authentic Antique Ethiopian Coptic Processional Cross for your consideration. The cross measures approx. 8 3/4 inches tall, 2 3/4 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches deep. Base diameter measures approx. 1 1/2 inches, inner hole diameter approx. 3/4 of an inch. African, Ethiopia, 19th Century. Christian, Orthodox. Abyssinian, Silver-alloy, hand crafted in the lost wax casting method. Composed of two central crosses enclosed within a pear-shaped frame. A similar pear-shaped cross in Addis Ababa (capital of modern Ethiopia) has at its center the crucified Christ, reflecting the larger meaning of the “pear” shape as a type of “mandorla” (almond-shaped halo) used to glorify images of the Lord. Six angel wings & twelve circular motifs border the object, likely representing the significance of the 12 disciples. Cross relic is fashioned into finial support with triangular designed openwork. Flattened circular base, with inner hollow for mounting (mequamia). Handwritten label on underside of base reads, “19C. PROCESSIONAL CROSS. ETHIOPIA EX: WALTER HARMON COLL.”. Very good antique condition. Shows wear commensurate with age and use. Stands just slightly slanted. Natural aged patina. See photos. Displays inspirational!
